Youth Exchange is one in many phases of the project called “Inclusion: Challenge & Opportunity for the Millennium” from 15th December 2010 to 14th December 2011.

All activities will take place in Roubaix (France), Brussels (Belgium), Hanoi (Vietnam), Beijing (China) and nearby areas.

These projects involve the active participation of young people and are designed to allow them to discover and become aware of different social and cultural realities, to learn from each other, to develop the entrepreneurial spirit and reinforce their feeling of being European citizens.

Youth Exchange enables young people to

Hanoi, 1st July 2011

Our warmest wishes for the Lunar New Year,

Dear all,

We have just finished the most important workcamp of this year: Lunar New Year workcamp for disadvantaged people including for the patient children in the National Pediatrics Hospital and people living in the Fisher Village.

The workcamp was highly appreciated by all the participants as well as by the beneficiaries. We would like to quote here one email sending directly to our director of her thoughts about the workcamp as our warmest wishes for the Tet's holiday. Thank you so much, particularly Elyssa Back and all the volunteers joined the workcamp.

We also hope all you - our partners and our friends a lucky and wealthy year!

" Hi Phuc and members of the SJ Vietnam staff,

My name is Elyssa Back.  I was a participant in the recently completed Lunar New Year workcamp (Jan 2011).

I just wanted to commend Duc, Hana, Ly and the other local leaders on an *amazing* workcamp.  They did a terrific job organizing our activities, meals and local experiences.  Everything ran smoothly and professionally - which is not easy with almost 20 volunteers.

They also went above-and-beyond the job requirements to help participants.  They regularly made arrangements on our behalf to ensure we were treated fairly & received the services we needed.  We all really appreciated the extra effort.

I wanted to personally thank Duc and his team for all their hard work.  They left me with an incredibly positive impression of the Vietnamese people, SJ Vietnam and your programs.

Many thanks for a job well done!"

Organizing International children’s day for kids in National pediatrics hospital.

In 1st June, volunteer group in “Bring a smile” project hold a small festival for disadvantaged children in National pediatrics hospital in very special way.

The volunteers had lots of activities such as games, drawing, playing with children.

Though it was not a music performance as many times before, the volunteers still gave lots of smiles and happiness to the kids.

Thank to hard work and great contribution of the volunteers, “Bring a smile” has been coordinated and managed successfully since 2006.

VolTra volunteer group successfully participated in the workcamp in Hai Duong welfare center to help orphan and disable children.

At the end of May, a group of 24 volunteers from Hong Kong led by VolTra communication director, Mr Chung Hiu Pun, as the camp leader came to Vietnam working with 9 local volunteers.

During their stay, the group had contributed so much to development of the welfare center. The volunteers organized English teaching, taking care orphans, repairing materials and holding many interesting activities for the disadvantaged kids.

Overall SJ Vietnam aim to have all workcamps led by a local volunteer, as they can easily provide a link between the local community and international volunteers. Basically, the workcamp leader's tasks are to manage the work (explain the tasks and the schedule...), arrange leisure activities (cultural exchanges, going out...) and the group life of an average 10 volunteers. Please notice that a workcamp lasts two weeks.

As a personally challenging experience, it's a great chance to discover useful projects dedicated to disadvantaged people, to have an exchange with people from all over the world and to improve your skills at the same time! All the enthusiastic and engaged local volunteers can learn how to lead a workcamp by attending to a 1 day training that we will organize in April.

The training is free, however in exchange you will have to lead a workcamp at the time that you want from April until September.

You can take your chance!

Please confirm your attendance before Friday 16th April, 2010! If you have any question, please do not hesitate to contact me via email : info@sjvietnam.org T.

A very special karaoke

On Sunday, 28th of March, students from the Blind School experienced karaoke for the very first time. Marius, long-term volunteer at the Blind School, and Trang, local coordinator for this project organized this unique experience.

Indeed, girls love singing, the children know plenty of songs by heart and sounds and music are very important for blind people. These children had never been to karaoke before and they were really excited. The adventure started from the Blind School. The karaoke place was located next to the school but children still had to cross some streets.

Once they arrived at the karaoke room, they were at first very shy and didn't know how to behave. So the volunteers started to sing Vietnamese and English songs, which was a good icebreaker to make them feel comfortable. Finally, everybody sang, even the youngest and shyest one, a 9 year-old girl. The 16 year-old boys, who didn't want to sing at the beginning, finally asked Marius to sing with them, all together. ''I'm so happy!!'' said one of them.

They stayed two and a half hours, singing, having fun, sharing this unique moment. It was already dark when they returned home. Next time, they plan to go to the zoo, with children from the Youth House. They can't wait!.

International Volunteer Day 5th dec 2009

"A day for recognizing and honoring the efforts of volunteering worldwide, and an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to show case their contribution to the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals."

Here were the goals of the International Volunteer Day 2009 which took place on the 5th of December at the Botanical Garden of Ha Noi as in many other capital cities throughout the world.

This year, the event was organized thanks to the contribution of 14 local and international organizations active in the sphere of volunteering in Ha Noi.

The global theme was “Volunteering for our planet”  and provided the participants with the opportunity to find more about a wide range of volunteer opportunities. It also allowed them to increase their knowledge of environmental issues and environment protection through thematic activities that covered topics like wildlife protection, the ocean, green transport, waste, 3Rs, global climate change and urban pollution. They also took part in many leisure activities such as fun games and music performances done by the volunteers themselves and had the chance to get to know other local and international volunteers.

During the whole day, SJ Vietnam staff, international and local volunteers contributed to the celebration by holding SJV’s own tent and organizing many activities (fun games, music, dance and cheer performances).

Sponsorship Invitation

Mid-Autumn Festival is coming for all the children throughout the country. While other children can enjoy this special day with their family and friends, many unlucky ones have to stay in the hospital for long-time treatment or do shoes shining and sell newspapers on the streets to make their living… “Smiles in the Full-moon night” is a social event organized by SJ Vietnam at Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics in Hanoi on October 3rd 2009. Through this event, we would like to bring a warm and memorable Mid-Autumn Festival to more than five hundred disadvantaged children at Bo De Pagoda, Fisher Village on Red River and child patients at Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics in Hanoi. The children will participate in many traditional games, creative activities such as making lanterns, drawing pictures and performances held by our local and international volunteers. Besides, there will be an exhibition and auction of pictures drawn by the children to raise fund to help them. In order to organize a successful event, we would like to call for your financial contribution or materials donation; together we will bring a meaningful Mid-Autumn Festival to unfortunate lives.   Thank you very much!
